Sometimes, the simplest moments remind us why we do what we do.
What began as a heartfelt post on X by our videographer, James Mutatina, quickly turned into a meaningful act of appreciation for one of our most loyal viewers, demonstrating our commitment to listening, responding, and staying connected to the communities we serve.
While heading home after covering NBS Amasengejje, James noticed a small clinic in Kawempe where patients and visitors had gathered around an ageing television set to watch NBS Television. Despite the poor picture quality, the viewers remained fully engaged, choosing to follow their favourite programmes on NBS.
Moved by what he saw, James shared the moment on X.
“My leader @kkariisa, I’m in love with this place. Was hurrying home for #NBSAmassengejje, then spotted a small clinic with NBS TV playing it. Couldn’t pass it had to sit and watch first. Naye my leader Babulamu ka SmartTV koka.”
The post immediately caught the attention of our Group CEO, Kin Kariisa, whose response reflected the values that continue to define Next Media.
“Desire Mugumisa, look for this place. Let’s have a smart TV in that place by 30th June. My brother, Mutatina, thank you for loving NBS.”
Our Senior Manager for Corporate Affairs, Desire Mugumisa, promptly responded.
“Consider it done, Kin! We’ll have NBS glowing in that spot before the month is out.”
True to that commitment, we delivered and installed a brand-new 43-inch smart television at AMA Clinic, replacing the old set that had faithfully served viewers for years.
Speaking during the handover, Desire Mugumisa said the gesture was inspired by the loyalty shown by the clinic’s viewers and our commitment to giving back to the communities that continue to choose our content.
“When James highlighted the situation, our Group CEO saw an opportunity to appreciate people who have continued to choose NBS. Today, we are delivering on that promise with a new television that will provide a better viewing experience as we continue to inform and transform Uganda,” he said.
The proprietor of AMA Clinic expressed gratitude for the unexpected gesture.
“I am very happy today. I never expected this. We are grateful to Kin Kariisa and Next Media for this wonderful gift,” he said.
Reflecting on how it all began, James said he was touched by the viewers’ loyalty.
“I walked into the clinic simply because I wanted to watch NBS. When I saw how committed everyone was to following our programmes despite the old television, I felt they deserved something better. I’m grateful that our CEO responded immediately.”
By the end of the day, the new television had been installed, bringing a clearer viewing experience to everyone at the clinic, while the old set that had served the community for years was carefully retired.
For us, this was about appreciating the people who continue to make us part of their everyday lives. It was about listening, acting, and recognising that every viewer matters.
As we celebrate 18 years of NBS, moments like these re-enforce that our greatest achievement has always been the trust our audiences place in us. That trust continues to inspire us to inform, inspire, and transform communities across Uganda, one story and one meaningful act at a time.
