Next Media has officially issued a statement condemning the targeted assault, arrest, and intimidation of NBS Television journalists who were covering the Kawempe North By-Election.
The affected team—Francis Isano, Hassan Wasswa, and Hakim Wampamba—was deliberately attacked by security personnel while executing their professional duties. Francis Isano, a photojournalist, is currently hospitalized after sustaining injuries during the assault.
As Uganda’s leading media group, we find these actions not only unjustified but deeply troubling. They reflect a broader threat to press freedom, electoral transparency, and the safety of journalists in the country.
In our official statement, we demand:

The immediate and unconditional release of detained journalists

The return of confiscated media equipment

Urgent medical support for the injured
We call on the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF), Uganda Police Force, the Electoral Commission, and relevant human rights institutions to act swiftly, transparently, and decisively.
