Next Media has launched a new Corporate Social Responsibility campaign in Uganda to combat online fraud. The “Beera Steady – Be Better” campaign was officially launched on March 14, 2023, at the Next Media Park, in collaboration with various Ugandan TV and radio stations and key players in the digital economy.
The campaign aims to empower individuals with the correct information to take control of their financial future and make informed decisions that will enable them to achieve their financial goals.
With the collective resources of key industry players, including MTN Uganda, Airtel Uganda, Equity Bank Uganda, the Uganda Bankers’ Association, the Uganda Communications Commission, the Bank of Uganda, the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance, and other partners, the initiative seeks to create a safer and more secure digital environment for all Ugandans.
Mobile money fraud is also increasing in Africa. Mobile money services, widely used across the continent, allow individuals to send and receive money using their mobile phones. However, fraudsters have found ways to exploit this system, with some using fake calls or hacking into mobile money accounts to steal money.
With around 76% of Ugandans using digital financial services for transactions, anyone can fall prey to digital fraud. The “Beera Steady – Be Better” campaign seeks to provide solutions to help Ugandans protect and multiply their financial resources, particularly those in the digital realm.
Hon. Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, emphasized the government’s commitment to digital transformation, saying that the involvement of the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance would go a long way in spreading the campaign’s message across the country.
Eng. Irene Kaggwa Sewankambo, the Executive Director of the Uganda Communications Commission, also highlighted the importance of the campaign, stating that “We are slowly going to a cashless economy, and if we want to be part of the national social transformation process, we need to be armed with the correct information.”
The “Beera Steady – Be Better” campaign is a timely initiative to help Ugandans navigate the increasingly digital landscape and protect their financial resources. With the proper measures in place, Uganda can overcome the challenge of online fraud and build a safer and more secure digital environment.
