Next Media Partners with iKon Awards to Celebrate Ugandan Film and Television Industry

The first-ever iKon Awards, which took place on March 25, 2023, at the Kampala Serena Hotel, was a night to remember, and Next Media played a significant role as one of the event’s sponsors, solidifying its commitment to promoting Ugandan talent in the film and television industry.

Hosted by comedian Uncle Mo and actress Anitah Fabiola, the iKon Awards brought together a star-studded guest list that included Nollywood star Ramsey Nouah, musician Eddy Kenzo, and Miss Uganda 2023 Hannah Karema, among other notable personalities from the fashion, music, film, and television industries.

From Best Actor and Best Actress to Best Director, Best Short Film, Best Feature Film, Best TV Series, and many more, these categories ensured that different talents and areas of the industry were acknowledged and honored.

One of the most deserving winners of the night was Michael Wawuyo Jr., who won the prestigious Best Actor Award, presented by Ramsey Nouah. Wawuyo Jr., a talented actor making waves in the Ugandan film industry, was recognized for his hard work and dedication, showcasing the immense talent in Uganda. Another notable winner was the short film The Girl in the Yellow Jumper, directed by Loukman Ali, which took home five awards, including Best Short Film, Best Director of a Short Film, Best Original Score, Best Sound Editing, and Best Production Design. Kafa Coh also had a memorable night, winning four awards, including Best Feature Film, Best Director of a Feature Film, Best Screenplay, and Best Editing.
The Lifetime Achievement Award, presented to Prof J.W. Katende, was another significant moment of the iKon Awards. Katende, a renowned figure in the Ugandan film industry, was honored for his outstanding contribution to the industry, a well-deserved recognition of his invaluable work.

Aside from the awards ceremony, the iKon Awards also featured captivating performances by local artists such as Irene Ntale and “soet” Kabera Angel, adding to the overall entertainment factor of the event. Attendees were treated to live music while celebrating the remarkable achievements of the talented individuals being recognized.
