Dalton Kaweesa, the Chief News Editor of NBS, and Sam Ibanda Mugabi, a Senior Reporter and Producer with NBS, last week achieved significant milestones as they graduated with a Master of Arts Degree in Journalism and Communication and a Master of Arts Degree in Peace and Conflict Studies respectively, both from Makerere University. This accomplishment is a testament to both gentlemen’s dedication and unwavering commitment to improving the quality of journalism in Uganda.
Balancing their hectic work responsibilities with their academic pursuits was crucial to their registered success at the Next Media Park and in their personal lives. “I have learned to prioritize tasks and allocate time efficiently, ensuring every minute counts. This approach has enabled me to tame the whirlwind at the office while maintaining a healthy work-life balance,” Kaweesa shared with us before adding, “Anyone that has walked through Next Media will tell you planning is the cornerstone of our wins. I will know the most important task and what can wait.”
For Mugabi, on the other hand, it was all God. Shortly after the official graduation ceremony, he tweeted, “Glory be to the Lord for this great Master’s degree in Peace and Conflict Studies of Makerere University. [Life really] writes the best stories.”
Kaweesa’s Master’s degree in Journalism and Communication will have further deepened the highly experienced senior journalist’s understanding of media management and multimedia journalism, which knowledge is especially relevant in the digital age, especially at Next Media, whose digital realignment process demands we keep pace with the rapidly evolving technologies and changing audience habits.
Kaweesa’s career in journalism spans nearly a decade, during which he has gained experience in print, online, radio, and television. He has reported on various topics, anchored news programs, and produced current affairs talk shows. But what truly drives Kaweesa is his passion for using journalism to inform and transform society. He believes journalists have a crucial role in shaping public discourse and promoting social justice. By earning a master’s degree in journalism and communication, Kaweesa has demonstrated his commitment to this noble cause.
For Mugabi, on the other hand, his achievement shows that anyone can achieve their professional goals with hard work, dedication, and a commitment to lifelong learning. This will undoubtedly help him contribute to taking NBS’ newsroom to the next level, further cementing our position as a leading current affairs TV station in Uganda and the region.
